before you begin
-
Do I need orthodontic care?
Orthodontic care is tailored to individual needs, and not everyone requires treatment. While some may need orthodontics for functional reasons, the primary benefit for many patients is aesthetic, enhancing their smile for personal and social confidence. We’re happy to discuss your specific needs and the best path for your smile.
-
What age should my child have their first visit?
While orthodontic treatment usually begins when all adult teeth are in (around age 11-13), we recommend an initial visit around age 7. Early screenings can help identify any issues that may need attention, such as crossbite, underbite, or impacted teeth.
-
how do braces work?
Braces use brackets, wires, and rubber bands to move your teeth into their ideal positions. The brackets are glued to the teeth, and the wire applies consistent pressure to shift them. Elastic bands may be added to fine-tune the movement, helping to align teeth and correct bite and spacing issues.
-
Which type of braces are best for me?
Dr. Daniel has used many braces over the years. The short answer is they're pretty much all the same. While they may differ in design, what matters most is the skill of the orthodontist and the treatment plan tailored to your needs.
-
How do clear aligners work?
Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays that gradually move your teeth into the desired position. They are nearly invisible, and can be taken out when eating or brushing. Aligners are an excellent choice for those looking for a discreet option.
-
Which brand of aligners is the best?
While many aligner brands are available, Dr. Daniel believes that they all work effectively. The key is to find a system that fits your needs and preferences. We may offer a variety of brands, and guarantee results with any of them, tailored to your unique smile.
-
can adults have treatment too?
Orthodontic treatment is suitable for all ages. Whether you’re considering braces or aligners for the first time or looking to correct previous dental work, it’s never too late to improve your smile.
-
Are braces or aligners better?
Both options have their advantages and are highly effective in most cases. The choice between braces and aligners comes down to your lifestyle and preferences. Braces are fixed and constantly working, while aligners are removable, making them easier to clean and allowing for more flexibility.
During treatment
-
What type of appliances are used in treatment?
Depending on your specific needs, we may use a variety of appliances. This can include braces (metal, ceramic) or aligners, as well as appliances like rubber bands, expanders, carriere, etc. We’ll discuss the specific appliances suited to your treatment during your consultation.
-
How long will my treatment take?
Treatment duration typically ranges from 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of your case. The exact timeline will be provided after your in-person consultation. Factors such as the type of appliance, the severity of your condition, and how consistently you follow care instructions can influence the treatment duration. Regular check-ins will help us track your progress and adjust as needed.
-
how do I manage an emergency?
If you experience a broken bracket or poking wire, contact our office right away to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, you can use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges and ease discomfort. Fortunately, most orthodontic issues are minor and can be quickly addressed. For more details, visit our Emergencies section. We’re here to ensure your treatment stays on track.
-
How often will I need to visit the office during treatment?
Typically, you’ll visit our office every 8 weeks for progress checks. Certain appliances and specific situations may require more frequent checks. If you’re using aligners, you may need fewer in-person visits, but we’ll monitor your progress to ensure everything is on track.
-
What if I lose my aligner trays?
If you lose an aligner tray, contact our office as soon as possible. Depending on your treatment progress, we may be able to move forward to the next tray or may need to order a replacement. We’ll guide you on the best course of action to keep your treatment on track.
-
What can i eat & drink with braces?
It’s important to avoid foods that can damage or get stuck in your braces. Stay away from sticky, hard, and crunchy foods, such as gum, nuts, and popcorn. These can break brackets or bend wires, which may delay your treatment. Additionally, avoid sugary foods and drinks to prevent white spots (early cavities) from forming around your braces. Instead, choose softer foods and cut tough or chewy foods into smaller pieces.
-
What can i eat & drink with aligners?
Clear aligners offer fewer restrictions compared to braces, but there are still important guidelines to follow. With aligners, it’s crucial to clean your teeth before putting them back in. This helps prevent trapping sugars or food particles against your teeth, especially after eating or drinking sugary drinks like coffee with sweeteners or soda. Always brush your teeth or rinse thoroughly before reinserting your aligners to keep your teeth clean and avoid potential damage to the enamel.
when you’re all done

How long do I need to wear my retainers?
To maintain your beautiful new smile, wearing retainers is essential. Initially, you’ll need to wear them full-time (except when eating or brushing), and after a period, we will transition to night-only wear. Dr. Daniel will guide you on the appropriate retainer wear schedule, but consistency is key to preventing your teeth from shifting back.
-
What if I stop wearing my retainers?
If you stop wearing your retainers, it is likely your teeth will gradually shift back to their original positions, undoing the progress made during your treatment. We recommend wearing your retainers as instructed to keep your smile straight and beautiful long-term. If you notice any changes in fit or discomfort, let us know asap so we can assist with adjustments or replacements.
-
Should I visit my regular dentist after treatment?
Yes! After your orthodontic treatment is complete, we recommend scheduling a check-up with your general dentist to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy. Once your braces or attachments are off, it’s easier for your dentist to perform a thorough exam and ensure the overall health of your teeth. Regular dental visits should continue throughout your treatment as well.
-
Can i whiten my teeth right away?
It’s best to wait a few weeks after your braces are removed before whitening. This allows your teeth to stabilize and gives your saliva time to remineralize the enamel. We recommend a dental check and professional cleaning first to ensure your teeth are in optimal condition. After a few weeks, you can begin whitening to achieve that perfect finishing touch!
-
How often should I clean my retainer?
Regular cleaning of your retainer is essential to maintain its cleanliness. We recommend cleaning it daily with lukewarm water and a gentle toothbrush. You can also use retainer cleaning tablets for added hygiene. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the retainer, and refrain from using toothpaste, as it may scratch the surface
-
What should I do if my retainer is lost/broken?
All patients receive two sets of retainers upon completing treatment, so you can use your backup if needed. If both sets are lost or broken, please contact our office immediately. We can schedule an appointment to replace the retainer. Continuing to wear a broken retainer could lead to shifting of your teeth, so it’s best to address the issue right away.
